Information
What is PRF?
Platelet Rich Fibrin is obtained from your own blood by a simple blood draw in the office. It contains proteins that are known to be regenerative to many body tissues. It also contains, platelets and fibrin (for blood clotting), white blood cells, and even a small amount of stem cells. When injected into the tear troughs, PRF will treat hyperpigmentation, wrinkles and even hallowing over time. You can expect a temporary filling effect from the fluid that is placed (which quickly firms up after injection), but then this may recede in a few days. However, regeneration of tissue and healing is expected within 4-6 weeks.
What is the difference between dermal fillers and PRF?
While dermal fillers have instant results, they metabolize and dissolve typically within 1-1.5 years. Furthermore, dermal fillers may not be for everyone. If you are one that suffers from morning puffiness or swelling around your eyes, you will not be a great candidate since it can increase the amount of puffiness.
PRF on the other hand, although the initial filling effect is temporary, you see full results in 4-6 weeks, and lasts close to 2 years or longer. That’s because PRF promotes fibrin, elastin, and other components of collagen and skin structures, allowing for the regenerative effect mentioned earlier. Its effect wears off not because it metabolizes and disappears, but rather, because your skin structures slowly return to the normal aging process.
What are the pre-procedure instructions?
Do not take any anticoagulation medication, such as Aspirin or NSAIDs (Non-steroidal anti-inflammatory drugs) such as Ibuprofen or Naproxen, or steroids such as prednisone for 7 days prior to the procedure.
If you are taking Coumadin, Xarelto, or Eliquis for medical reasons, please consult with our doctor.
Discontinue gingko biloba and Vitamin E at least 3 days prior to your procedure (blood thinners).
Do not consume alcohol for 24 hours prior.
Stay well hydrated the day of your procedure.
Avoid getting Botox/Xeomin) injections at least 2 weeks prior and 2 weeks after your procedure
What happens during the procedure?
The procedure will take approximately 45 minutes to complete. After the numbing solution has been applied to the treatment area, your blood will be drawn and spun down in a centrifuge. The PRF solution is extracted and administered through a blunt-tip cannula to the tear troughs or other face regions.
What are the post-procedure instructions?
Do not ice the treatment area
Do not take any anti-inflammatories for approximately 5 days afterward unless medically necessary. There are other pain relievers our doctor can prescribe instead.
Avoid alcohol intake for 24 hours before and after.
Avoid heat or UV exposure for 3 days after. These disrupt collagen and elastin formation.
Stay well hydrated both with oral and topical skin hydration.
Will I have to repeat PRF?
For optimal results, expect to receive up to three treatments, 6-8 weeks apart. After results are achieved, a treatment every 1-2 years is recommended to continue to maintain the collagen and elastin growth.
